Just like the DMV, if you didn't get to the citizenship office early, you'd be waiting in line forever. Perhaps Zechariah went a little overboard showing up ten minutes before the office doors were even open, but he was getting bored staring at the sunrise through his bedroom window for the ninth day in a row.
At the stroke of 7am, an elderly woman begrudgingly unlocked the front door and ushered the boy inside while she went back to sitting behind the desk and sipping coffee out of a large mug. Zechariah could feel her eyes boring holes into the back of his head as he filled out his paperwork and caught sight of the tired glare as he handed in the finished application.
He mumbled a quick "thank you" and got only an annoyed grunt in return, signaling that he could and probably should leave. It was perfecting timing too, as more people were starting to trickle into the building as the sun now cast a blinding glare through the windows.

Trickling into the building among many normal looking individuals, one may have stood out with the layer of soot covering splotches of otherwise porcelain white skin. A trail of ash and dirt followed closely behind as Teivel stepped up to the front desk, flashing the poor woman a white and obnoxious grin. "I'm ready to apply, madam".
A packet would be shoved at his chest, and the filthy boy took a seat at one of the formica tables lining the walls, filling out the needed information with a pen that was smudged across the paper along with dark brown dust that turned the crisp white sheet dark yellow in color. When he finished, he handed the paperwork to the cringing desk lady who took the corner in between thumb and fore-finger. Teivel simply chucked and ambled back out, stretching his arms over his head before heading off to his home to shower and dress for his real job.
